The detail
Essays span a wide range, so it helps to think in word bands. A five-paragraph school essay is typically 300–600 words (about 400–800 tokens). A college application or coursework essay is often 1,000–2,000 words (about 1,300–2,700 tokens). A term paper can reach 3,000–5,000 words (4,000–6,650 tokens).
These figures matter when you ask an AI model to review, summarize, or grade an essay: the essay itself is the input, and the model’s feedback is additional output tokens you also pay for. Both fit easily inside modern context windows.
Citations, footnotes, and reference lists add tokens beyond the prose word count, and bibliographies with URLs tokenize heavily. Count the full document if precise budgeting matters.
